How to Cite a Table
(Above the table):
Title/Provided caption.
(Below the table):
Author’s first name and last name (if available). “Title of Web Page.” Name of the Website, Name of publisher/sponsor, Date of content (if given), URL of page. Date of access.
A table is a way to visually organize your data and results. Although they must also be numbered and given a title/caption, the MLA rules for tables differ from the rules for figures. As with figures, a caption is simply a name to describe the information being presented. The key difference is that the table number and title/caption go above the table, while the citation info goes underneath. See the example below:
Example:
A table entitled The Dwarf Planets (from space-facts.com)
Grades 9-12
This is what goes under your table:
Source: Todd Powers, “Dwarf Planet Facts.” Space-Facts, Space Facts, 2017, space-facts.com/dwarf-planets/. Accessed 28 Sept. 2021.
This is what goes in your Works Cited: *
Powers, Todd. “Dwarf Planet Facts.” Space-Facts, Space Facts, 2017, space-facts.com/dwarf-planets/. Accessed 28 Sept. 2021.
* If you only use a source for the table (and don't quote/paraphrase any words from it) and you supply all the table's bibliographic info below it, you don't need to list the reference in your Works Cited. If you create the table yourself (and the data is yours), you don't need to include it in your Works Cited.
