How to Number, Caption, and Cite a Figure
Figure __. Title/Provided caption. Alias/Author’s last name, First name (if available). “Title of Web Page.” Name of the Website, Name of publisher/sponsor, Date of content (if given), URL of page. Date of access.
A figure is anything visual that you bring into your essay, which includes pictures, maps, drawings, screenshots, charts, etc. The only thing not included are tables, which you can find info for here. You have to individually number every figure that appears in your essay.
A caption is just a name you give to describe the figure you're using if it doesn't already have a title. The title/caption goes after the figure number. Use a caption when the internet image you're using doesn't have a title or when it's a picture that you took yourself. There are 2 different scenarios that determine what goes under the figure. See the example below...
A Flying Squirrel (from nkytribune.com)
Grades 9-12
Scenario 1
This is what goes under your image if the only thing you used from the source is that image * :
Figure 1. Flying Squirrel. Art Lander, "Kentucky Native Southern Flying Squirrel Seldom Seen in Woods." Northern Kentucky Tribune, Kentucky Center for Public Service Journalism, 10 Aug. 2016, www.nkytribune.com/2016/08/art-landers-outdoors-kentucky-native-southern-flying-squirrel-seldom-seen-in-woods/. Accessed 28 Sept. 2021.
Scenario 2
This is what goes under your image if, in addition to the image, you have used other things from that source as well (quotes, data, etc.):
Figure 1. Flying Squirrel (Lander).
In scenario 2 you are able to make a short citation because you will later have the full information in your Works Cited:
Lander, Art. "Kentucky Native Southern Flying Squirrel Seldom Seen in Woods." Northern Kentucky Tribune, Kentucky Center for Public Service Journalism, 10 Aug. 2016, www.nkytribune.com/2016/08/art-landers-outdoors-kentucky-native-southern-flying-squirrel-seldom-seen-in-woods/. Accessed 28 Sept. 2021.
* If you only use a source for the figure (and don't quote/paraphrase any words from it) and you supply all the figure's info below it, you don't need to list the reference in your Works Cited. If you take the picture yourself, you don't need to include it in your Works Cited.
